REALTOR® Association Headquarters Garners LEED Gold Status Sustainability, Efficiency are Hallmarks of Fairfax Facility
Fairfax, VA – The Northern Virginia Association of REALTORS® proudly announces that its Fairfax headquarters facility has achieved gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design core and shell rating system.
Located at 8407 Pennell Street, this home for 10,000 plus local real estate professionals was built using the concise LEED framework that implements measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
The LEED system promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing construction and design strategies and allotting points towards status levels from a number of categories. Those subject areas include: sustainable sites; water efficiency, energy and atmosphere; material and resources; indoor environmental quality; and design innovation.
“LEED certification identifies our NVAR headquarters as a pioneering example of sustainable design,” said Karen Trainor, NVAR Chairman of the Board. “We are pleased to be on the leading edge of positive change in the building industry, and hope that our project can help to set a new standard of sustainability for the Northern Virginia community.”
Students from Graham Road Elementary School toured the facility earlier this year for a hands-on learning experience and “sustainable scavenger hunt.” The visitors observed the building’s green roof, use of passive solar energy, high concentration of recycled-content materials, low-VOC finishes and reduced building footprint.
“From the beginning planning stages, I said ‘go for gold,’ – and I knew it would be done,” said former NVAR Chairman and building committee member Jane A. Quill. “This is a dream come true for our Northern Virginia REALTORS®. Our members now have a home away from home.”
Visitors are welcome in NVAR’s new headquarters to see how a “green” commercial facility can be integrated seamlessly into the surrounding residential community.
