Romney’s and Obama’s Housing Policies: Why the Candidates Seem Reluctant to Go There (AOL Real Estate)

October 9, 2012  |  by John Heithaus

Like many Americans, I tuned into the Presidential debates with great interest looking forward to hearing relevant and important topics relating to the real estate market. Author Teke Wiggin does an excellent job of presenting the situation in this article.

Take a few moments to give the article a good read; there’s some really interesting insights and comments from real estate experts, economists and political observers. Unfortunately, as the article states: “Housing experts say that voters can probably expect both candidates to avoid painting a full picture of their housing policy platforms and instead launch into partisan attacks on each other over the issue.”

Given the importance of this issue to all of us in MRIS-land (as purchasers, sellers and prospects for real estate) let’s hope the topic gets more attention in the coming weeks and we see some meaningful statements/policies, regardless of our political leanings.

  2. We just completed research in one market that suggests that consumers that itemize their taxes are VERY interested in maintaining the Mortgage Interest Deduction. Other studies suggest that lower income consumers believe the MID should go away – while arguably written with inflammatory language and targeted to lower income consumers, it's clear that there is no consistent point of view from consumers about how to handle MID as we move forward. Not sure where it will go, but I agree that it would be nice for the candidates to more specifically discuss their plans for the future. I would also love to hear from the other 6 candidates that are also running for president – how come we don't hear what they think?
